Solid progress was made on establishing a constitutional committee after meetings with Syrian officials, said the UN special envoy for Syria in Damascus on Wednesday.
Geir Pedersen, the envoy, arrived in Damascus Tuesday night and had two meetings with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem the next day.
"We have had very positive and constructive discussions, I believe I have made a very solid progress, and that we are very close to an agreement on establishing the constitutional committee as a door opener for the wider political process," said Pedersen.
The Syrian state news agency also reported that the meetings had achieved solid progress, yet emphasized that the Syrian constitutional committee should be led by a Syrian and any foreign interference would be opposed.
Pedersen said he also discussed the Idlib situation with Syrian officials. He hoped the agreement on establishing demilitarized zone in Idlib reached by Russia and Turkey can be restored in force, so that Idlib can be restored to a stable situation.
The Syrian National Dialogue Congress, held in early 2018 in Sochi, Russia, decided to form a constitutional committee to promote the political process of Syria. The 150-member committee consists of three parts, with one third of the members selected by the Syrian government, one third selected by the Syrian opposition and the other 50 members from civil societies and independents.
The nomination list submitted by the UN has not been acknowledged by the Syrian government and the constitutional committee has not been established yet.
