A bus carrying 30 tourists lost control and plunged into the roadside after being hit by a huge rock that rolled off a mountain, killing at least eight people and injuring another 16, in southwest China's Sichuan Province on Thursday.

The accident happened at 14:05 on a section of the national highway No. 213 in Minjiang Town, Songpan County of Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan.

According to local authorities, three people died on impact and one passenger died while receiving treatments in hospital. In addition, rescuers found another four dead under the rock.

Local authorities have organized relevant personnel to comfort the families of the victims.

So far, the snarl-up in both directions of the highway caused by the accident has been cleared and the traffic has returned to normal.

The other injured passengers are still being treated in hospital.
