Tongren city of southwest China's Guizhou Province is making a huge splash with its giant pumpkins.

The usually quiet tobacco planting and agricultural area has been turned upside down lately with scores of visitors flocking to the Jiufeng Agricultural Exposition of Wanshan to witness the six giant pumpkins, with the largest one measuring 110 centimeters in diameter and weighing at least 400 kilograms.

"We've never seen such a huge pumpkin. It's my first time, so I'm really amazed," said Yang Yueping, a visitor.

Farmers planted the pumpkin seeds in March, and kept just one pumpkin on one vine. They placed a scales under the pumpkins to monitor their wight, and found that they can grow 10 kilograms in just one day.

To cultivate giant pumpkins, the Agricultural Exposition created a special team to plant and cultivate them.

"We Jiufeng have so many greenhouses, but no one has pumpkins weighing 400 kilograms to 450 kilograms. Only in Wanshan has big pumpkins about 400 kilograms. Last year, we had pumpkins weighing more than 400 kilograms. This year, we hope they would get up 400 kilograms to 500 kilograms," said Wang Xiquan, production manager of Jiufeng Agricultural Exposition.
