Storyline

A mountain road in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is attracting numerous visitors with its breathtaking sceneries.

Winding through the picturesque Tianshan Mountain, the 561-kilometer Dushanzi-Kuqa Highway, dubbed one of "China's most beautiful highways", links Dushanzi, an oil rich town, and Kuqa, an ancient town on the Silk Road.

Enjoying beautiful sceneries of mountains, valleys, steppes and rivers along the way, the highway is part of National Highway G217 and a key link between northern and southern Xinjiang.

Before its completion in 1983, there was only one highway connecting the two parts of the region, which takes a detour to Urumqi, the capital city of the autonomous region, and which thus is more than 1,000 kilometers long. The Dushanzi-Kuqa Highway, however, saves half the trek.

As more than 280 kilometers of the highway locates more than 2,000 meters above the sea level, the local government has to exercise traffic control for seven months a year due to the snowy and icy weather in the winter season.

Numerous visitors have been attracted by the picturesque scenery along the highway since it was opened to the public on June 5.

"We are attracted by this highway, and want to experience that. It turns out to be so beautiful," a visitor from central China's Henan Province told China Central Television (CCTV).

"It feels so different from other roads. The scenery is so beautiful, and it feels as if I am in a wonderland," said another visitor from northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.

According to the local transportation authorities, nearly 5,000 vehicles enter the highway every day since it was opened.

Many visitors are willing to stop at a scenic spot in Hejing County of Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture to take a break. The county has also taken measures to improve its service and facilities to better serve the tourists.

"Many visitors would like to come to the Mongolian yurt to experience traditional dwellings. In order to improve our capacity of reception, we have about 1,200 yurts, which can receive more than 6,000 guests. Besides, there are more than 4,000 beds in the hotels across the county," Qin Long, an official of Hejing County, told the CCTV.

Despite the adoption of such measures, a lot of visitors are not able to find a place to stay in a busy season. Therefore, many visitors choose to camp on the grassland to enjoy the scenery.
