Storyline


The 15th Liwa Date Festival opened on Wednesday in the western town of Liwa in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), attracting flocks of visitors and tourists to taste the country's iconic fruit.

Grown up in a date palm usually seen near oasis of West Asia and North Africa, dates are one of the important export crops in Middle Eastern countries, such as the UAE.

Hosted by the Cultural Programmed and Heritage Festivals Committee of Abu Dhabi, the Liwa Date Festival started in 2005 and aims to promote UAE's fresh dates and date products, culture of date plantation, as well as traditional customs and the history of UAE.

Dates, a kind of fruit the local people enjoy at an early age, is reputed as the "bread of the deserts" because of its rich nutrition.

At this year's date festival, visitors can not only enjoy different varieties of fresh dates, but also date products.

In addition, a special commission was set up to grade the selected date samples for appearance, size and weight.

"Holding such a competition has a special meaning. Through the competition, local date planter will be more encouraged in cultivating better dates according to national agriculture planting standard," said Mubarak Ali, chairman of the special commission for Liwa Date Festival.

"In history, there are lots of poems praising dates and date palms. Date palms are actually closely related with Arabic culture. We have already regarded it as the greatness of our nation," said Abdullah Budhi, person in charge of Liwa Date Festival.

This year's festival is scheduled to run from July 17 to July 27.
