Storyline

The newly-built Beijing Daxing International Airport held its first full-scale real scenario simulation on Friday to secure its official operation on September 30.

The drill started at 08:30 with 1,182 "passengers" taking 1,182 pieces of "luggage" to the departure lounge on the fourth floor to board 22 flights, involving 99 training courses.

Ten boarding gates, 35 check-in counters, 16 luggage turntables and eight passages for security check in two concourses were opened for Friday's drill. The drill lasted about six hours with about 6,000 staffs from 34 units.

In the future, the airport will achieve a self-service baggage check-in and boarding process with the application of new technologies including radio frequency identification and facial recognition.

"Together with the airport, we will adopt a paper-free process in the whole service including a facial recognition technology that will facilitate security check and boarding," said Feng Yifeng, deputy chief commander of the construction and operation headquarters of the China Eastern Airlines based at the airport.

"With this luggage recognition technology, passengers can fast and exactly locate their luggage and track it in the future just like tracking packages," said Bao Xincan, deputy general manager of the ground service support department with the China Southern Airlines.

The airport plans to have a total of six full-scale drills from July 19 to September 6 involving 787 training courses, 51,984 passengers and 500 flights.

"These drills can help us check whether the devices can function properly, the procedures can move smoothly, the emergency response plan can work well or the staff are familiar with the plan or not. They can also help us timely find problems and solve them to ensure the Daxing airport can operate smoothly," said Wang Yaqi, deputy general manager of the operation management department under the airport.

The airport, 46 km south of downtown Beijing, is designed to alleviate the pressure on the Beijing Capital International Airport in the city's northeastern suburbs. It is expected to handle 45 million passengers annually by 2021 and 72 million by 2025.
