Storyline

Residents are reeling following a gas plant blast in Yima City, central China's Henan Province on Friday that has caused severe damage to nearby residences.

A device in a gas factory owned by the Henan Coal Gas (Group) Co. Ltd., located in Yima, exploded at around 17:45 Friday, according to the government of Sanmenxia City, which administers Yima.

According to the press office of Sanmenxia Municipal Government, 12 people died in the blast, another 19 people were seriously injured, and three more are still unaccounted for as of 17:00 Saturday.

Dongmaling Village, the nearest village to the scene of the explosion, has been the most affected by the shock wave. A villager surnamed Ma said the shock wave overturned three iron gates at his house from the yard to the living room, shattering all the glass. Ma’s wife Liang Xi was alone at home when the blast happened.

"I was at home at the time. I heard a bang, and everything collapsed. There was a red light outside, and I couldn't see anything because there was smoke everywhere," Liang said.

Luckily no one was injured in Liang's family. But her neighbor Guo Shuanxiu's two grandchildren were hurt by broken windows.

"The window was just blown away, and hit the children in the head. Two children were in the bedroom then. The other two-year-old was lying in the living room, who was not injured," said Guo.

Fortunately, the two children were only slightly injured and have already been treated at a hospital. At present, the local authorities are conducting power line repairs, striving to restore power supply as soon as possible. Damage surveying has not started yet.
