Storyline

A unique "Hualian (painted faces) Festival" kicked off Thursday in the Puzhehei scenic spot of southwest China’s Yunnan Province, where locals and tourists smear dust on each other’s face to give blessings.

Hualian Festival is a traditional festival of the ethnic Yi minority group in Yunnan’s Qiubei County, with a history of over 1,000 years. Qiubei County holds a series of activities every year beginning in 2000, to demonstrate the colorful ethnic culture of the county. This year’s Hualian Festival activities will last a whole month.

It is a tradition of the festival that participants chase each other, and smear faces with grass dusts, as people believe it will bring good fortune. Old or young, familiar or strange, everyone would follow the tradition and enjoy themselves at the scene.

"I come from Japan, and this is the first time for me to participate in such an activity. I didn't expect an activity like this, it's really so much fun," said a tourist from Japan.

"I've taken a lot of pictures, and now I want to take some pictures with extremely black faces with teeth shown, just like yours," said another tourist.
