Storyline

Senior officers of the Hong Kong police force said at a press conference on Thursday that they have the strength and determination to maintain peace and stability in Hong Kong, and put an end to the violent acts that have lasted for over a month.

Chan Man-tak, chairman of the Superintendents' Association of the Hong Kong Police Force, said that Hong Kong police have taken firm actions against the violent acts of a small number of "radicals" since June 9. The police have received support and recognition from all social sectors in Hong Kong by showing professionalism and restraint during their law enforcement work, according to Chan.

"We are professional police officers, and our commanders at all levels are of the same mind. We have a catchphrase that goes as 'we rise and fall together'. No matter how difficult it is, we are the most important force in Hong Kong's rule of law. If we fall, so will Hong Kong. So I think this little difficulty and challenge at hand will not defeat us," said Chan.

Chan also said that the police have had their morale greatly boosted by the salute from Yang Guang, the spokesman of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, at a press conference on Monday.

"(The Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council) has spoken highly and commended the work of the Hong Kong police force, which is very encouraging to us. We have learned through different platforms and channels that our mainland compatriots, who are very concerned about the situation in Hong Kong, also support us a lot," he said.

"At the press conference, Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council highly praised the performance of the Hong Kong police and affirmed that our work is right and those who broke the law are wrong. Therefore, we Hong Kong police will certainly bring all those who break the law to justice," said Ng Wai-kei, chairman of Hong Kong Police Inspectors' Association.

Chairman of Hong Kong's Junior Police Officers Association Lam Chi-wai said that the rule of law is the cornerstone of Hong Kong's development, and the police force plays a crucial role in this regard, therefore the police have the ability and confidence to safeguard Hong Kong's peace and stability.

"The Hong Kong Police are absolutely capable of handling any incident in Hong Kong in terms of equipment and capabilities. Meanwhile we are 100 percent determined to continue maintaining Hong Kong's order and protecting its residents," Lam said.
