"The U.S. is escalating the trade war with China. I think China has had a very steady position. It's uncertain what the U.S. position was. There's so much bluster, so much bluff. Are they really just trying to change the trade surplus? In other words, they have the Chinese buy more goods or Americans buy fewer Chinese goods? At a certain point you have to say no, that's not really what this game is about. When you see the attacks on Huawei and the attacks on other Chinese companies that are integrating into the world economy, you can't come to the conclusion that it's not about a trade imbalance per se; it's about America deciding. This is a zero-sum game."

"I think the U.S. is trying to re-define what multilateralism means, which is all of the other countries that are part of the multilateral system have to bow before Washington. So even if the other countries that sign the JCPOA, the Iran nuclear arms deal, want to keep the deal, the United States says to them, we're going to sanction you, if you continue to live up to the agreement, the agreement that we all signed together with Iran. We're going to punish you. So they're not really walking away from multilateral agreements. They're re-defining them in a way that the United States insists that all the other countries in the world take second place and function as nothing more than junior partners or even vassals to America."

Storyline

The United States is practicing egoism across the globe, said a U.S. expert, following a string of words and actions regarding trade protectionism and unilateralism from the U.S.

Brian Becker, executive director of the ANSWER Coalition, a U.S.-based anti-war and civil rights group, made the remarks with the China Global Television Network (CGTN) on Monday, a week after the U.S. Treasury labeled China "a currency manipulator" due to the Chinese yuan's devaluation against the U.S. dollar on August 5.

According to Becker, the White House has put maximum pressure against China with kinds of restrictions being imposed on China, which has made others doubtful if it has a good faith to have talks with China and what are behind its motives.

"The U.S. is escalating the trade war with China. This is a zero-sum game," he said.

When talking about the U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Agreement on climate change, the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in recent years, Becker said the U.S. is seemingly pushing forward isolationism; however, it, in fact, wants the global system more consistent with its own interests, and that is egoism.

They're re-defining them in a way that the United States insists that all the other countries in the world take second place and function as nothing more than junior partners or even vassals to America," he said.
