It was the U.S. that stirred up the fight so China had to react accordingly and fight back. We have more confidence now to deal with the extreme pressure the U.S. puts on us and its flip-flopping after going through all the countermeasures in previous times."

Storyline

China gets strong grounds for taking necessary countermeasures in coping with the additional 10 percent tariffs the United States will put on Chinese imports from September 1, experts said.

The trade friction between the two countries has lasted for a more than a year, and some people in the United States have confronted China with escalating flip-flopping, maximum pressure and trade bullying.

China has strong perseverance and capability to protect its own interests, said Ruan Zongze, executive vice-president of China Institute of International Studies at a symposium on China-U.S. trade war held in Beijing Friday.

"If we use a metaphor with the American baseball game, then the U.S. would be pitcher and the China would be the catcher. It was the U.S. that stirred up the fight so China had to react accordingly and fight back. We have more confidence now to deal with the extreme pressure the U.S. puts on us and its flip-flopping after going through all the countermeasures in previous times," he said.

The trade talks between China and the U.S., as experts pointed out, must be achieved through cooperation and mutual benefits. But if the U.S. insists to choose confrontation, then China is ready to battle to the end.

Facts have proved that, said Tao Wenzhao, an expert from the Chinese Academy of Social Science, the Chinese economy is resilient enough to cope with trade war.

"China's GDP increased 6.3 percent in the first half of this year. That is an outstanding achievement. We are the largest trade partner for two thirds of the countries in the world. Although the trade volume between China and the U.S. dropped slightly, but China's trade with the EU, the ASEAN, as well as the Belt and Road countries all witnessed strong growth," he said.

As a major world economy, China has the capability of deterring any provocation and attempt that infringes on the country's interests, safeguarding its principles on major issues and fighting until securing a fair and just result, Zhou Shijian, a senior researcher from the Sino-US Relations Research Center at the Tsinghua University.

"By the end of July, U.S.'s soybean stocks had reached 29 million tons. China purchased 65 percent of all American soybeans, and I can say it clearly that no other countries in the world can substitute us. Soybean farmers will only go to bankruptcy if they can't sell their harvests. In less than one year, there are over 928 farms in the central and western parts of the U.S. going broke," he said.
