Nearly half of a million people attended a rally at a local park in Hong Kong Saturday to denounce violence and voice their support for the police.

Themed "Stop the violence and save Hong Kong", the rally at the Tamar Park gathered people from all walks of life to call for an immediate end to violence.

"The situation right now is pretty chaotic and messy and it has caused unease in everybody. We are supposed to live in the same peaceful home, but it seems they are now trying to destroy it," said a Hong Kong resident.

Another said Hong Kong is part of China.

"We are Hong Kong people and we are Chinese people in Hong Kong. We are Chinese and we will remain Chinese!"

Others said the majority of Hong Kong residents want to restore peace and normality to society and that it is time for everybody to say "no" to violence.

"The violence must stop and the chaos must end. The theme of this rally is 'stop the violence and save Hong Kong'. Hong Kong is now in a very serious and grave situation. I believe a vast majority of the seven million people in Hong Kong want peace and order as well as a better future for Hong Kong," said So Cheung Wing, a member of the National Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).
