Storyline

A joint marine drill was conducted on Monday between two flotillas of Chinese, Egyptian navies at a Mediterranean sea area of Egypt, featuring China's missile destroyer "Xi'an" of the 32nd Chinese naval escort fleet and the frigate "Arafat" of the Egyptian navy.

At 10:40, the 32nd Chinese naval escort fleet would leave the port of Alexandria in northern Egypt as scheduled after finishing a four-day technical stop, when two Egyptian boats carrying "terrorists" suddenly started sailing toward the missile destroyer "Xi'an", and the Chinese naval soldiers responded rapidly by chasing the two boats away after receiving no reaction from warning signals it had issued.

Afterwards, other exercises in the drill, including including formation changing, helicopter landing, along-rope descending, checking and capturing, and underway replenishment at sea, were also conducted.

During the drill, the two naval vessels took turns to work as the command ship.

"In the maritime joint drill, the Chinese and Egyptian navies enjoyed smooth issuing and execution of commands and cooperated with each other closely, which further improved the coordination capability of the warships dispatched by the two sides, and which deepened mutual trust and cooperation between the navies of the two countries," Chen Yizhou, vice-captain of "Xi'an", told China Central Television.

The missile destroyer "Xi'an" took a four-day technical stop on the way back to the Gulf of Aden after taking part in the activities to celebrate the "Day of the Russian Navy". During the stay at the port of Alexandria, Chinese naval officers, accompanied by Chinese Ambassador to Egypt Liao Liqiang, paid a visit to Egyptian Navy Commander Lieutenant-General Ahmed Khaled.

In addition, Chinese and Egyptian naval officers and sailors also visited each other's ships, and held football marches, so as to enhance mutual understanding and deepen friendship.
