More than 500 taxis displaying national flags and patriotic posters drove on major roads of Hong Kong on Friday evening in a gesture of support for the government and police to stop violence and restore peace in the city.
The parade, co-organized by Safeguard HK and the Taxi Drivers and Operators Association, was held primarily in Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. One fleet of taxis went back and forth from Shau Kei Wan and Sai Wan. Other fleets drove from Tsim Sha Tsui to Kwun Tong, and from Tsim Sha Tsui to Tsuen Wan.
Wong Yat-fung, chairman of the Taxi Drivers and Operators Association, said the recent protests have led to serious traffic congestion. More seriously, the rioters' violent attacks on a reporter and a tourist have severely tarnished Hong Kong’s international reputation and scared away numerous tourists. These have greatly affected the livelihood of taxi drivers.
