Storyline

Yuanmingyuan, also known as the Old Summer Palace, on Friday announced to the public its latest achievements of "Restoring 1860" phrase II, a project launched in May and aiming to repair the cultural relics unearthed from the former imperial garden complex which was burned down in the 19th century.

The restoration of a total of 11 porcelains and Buddha statues has been going on smoothly, of which, a blue and white porcelain bowl in the reign of Emperor Yongzheng (1678-1735) in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) is on display for the first time.

"The articles of Yongzheng administration are relatively few among the unearthed relics in Yuanmingyuan. Emperor Yongzheng's aesthetic was very elegant and had a strong sense of royal atmosphere. For example this article, is a blue and white porcelain piece decorated with patterns of flower and plant and margins are frequently located between each other. This is just like the Chinese ink and brush painting in which margins are left for imagination," said Chen Hui, director of the archaeological department of the Old Summer Palace management office.

According to Yuanmingyuan, compared with the first phase of the "Restoring 1860" project, the second phase covers retrieving relics from the reign periods of emperors Kangxi, Yongzheng and Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty (1616-1911).

At the same time, the glaze colors of those porcelains are various, including blue, red glaze, sky-clearing blue, and green. The number of repaired pieces increased from six in the first phase to 11 pieces. Those relics have important historical, artistic, economic and scientific research values.

The Old Summer Palace was used by emperors in the Qing Dynasty (1616-1911) as a summer resort. It covered 3.52 million square meters and boasted more than 150 scenic spots, earning the name of "Garden of Gardens."

In 1860, during the Second Opium War, the invading Anglo-French expedition force troops relentlessly reached the palace and conducted extensive looting and destruction. They committed complete destruction of the palace. The palace was so large that it took 4,000 men three days of burning to destroy it. Many exquisite artworks - sculptures, porcelain, jade, silk robes, elaborate textiles, gold objects and more - were stolen and are now found in 47 museums around the world, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
