Storyline


The 17th Pyongyang International Film Festival (PIFF) opened on Friday in Pyongyang, capital city of Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Contending for prizes and screenings were more than 400 domestic and foreign films, including 26 from China.

Films that have been selected for the competition or the screenings are from China, Russia, DPRK, Belarus, Italy, Iran and other countries.

Nine Chinese films, including "The Wandering Earth", have been chosen for competition at the festival and 17 others have been chosen for screening.

Jong Yong Nam, director-general of the National Administration of the Motion Picture Industry of DPRK, said at the opening ceremony that this year's event, which continues to pursue the ideals of independence, peace and friendship, will contribute to bolstering exchanges between film makers in the world, and boosting the development of the film industry.

"The Pyongyang International Film Festival can stimulate social progress and prosperity. It can play a guiding role in the development of the DPRK film industry. It is a stage for the friendly gathering of filmmakers around the world and a good opportunity for stimulating the development of the global film industry," said Jong.

This year's jury is made up of five judges from Russia, China, Cuba, Sweden and DPRK. They will pick winners of several awards including the Torch Award for best film.

The PIFF began in 1987 and became a biennial cultural event solely for developing countries from 1990.

Since 2002, this annual festival has become an international festival, welcoming films from other parts of the world.
