A female panda cub born at the Giant Panda Breeding Center in Xi'an City of northwest China's Shaanxi Province last month is now in good health, according to breeders.
The panda cub was born on August 25 to become the sixth cub of her mother, Lou Sheng. Despite some early concerns, breeders have been taking good care of the cub, and the cub now can consume around 150 grams of breast milk, and has grown to weigh over 800 grams.
"The cub's birth weight was 111 grams, which is relatively low compared with other newborn cubs. However, in the following period, through sharing the care with her mother and adjusting our time of taking and returning the newborn to her mother, the panda cub is now in a very good condition," said Zhao Pengpeng, senior veterinarian at the Giant Panda Breeding Center of Shaanxi Academy of Forestry.
According to staff, Lou Sheng was the first artificially bred giant panda in Shaanxi. The 16-year-old was named after her birthplace in Xi'an's Louguantai region.
It has been a fruitful year for the breeding center, who also welcomed a pigeon pair of panda cubs in July. At present, the Qinling Mountains Giant Panda Breeding Center of Shaanxi Academy of Forestry has successfully bred 20 giant panda cubs. There are now 24 pandas in captivity, three of which are in the gestation period and expecting panda babies.
