Storyline


Chinese technology company Huawei will join the nationwide 5G testing and demonstration in Malaysia, as the country looks to become one of Asia's earliest adopters.

Other Asian and European companies, like ZTE of China, are also welcomed to engage in the program.

Maxis, a leading communications provider in Malaysia, has just made clear its choice of 5G partner by signing a cooperation deal on Oct. 3 with Huawei.

Malaysia's Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad attended the signing ceremony of the deal. He has also got a crash course in Huawei's 5G technology.

The signal was clear – Malaysia is open to working with all technology providers as it seeks to adopt 5G as quickly as possible.

"Huawei will be supplying 4G LTE (Long Term Evolution) and 5G radio equipment and services. We will have access to insights, standards, products and solutions that will make 5G easier to deploy and operate," said Maxis Chairman Raja Arshad Raja Uda.

"Huawei has been in Malaysia since 2001 and remains committed to support Malaysia's digital national agenda," said Ryan Ding, CEO of Huawei's Carrier BG.

By involving the government and leading telecoms companies from different countries, Malaysia aims to make smart investment in 5G.

"We need to make sure that we collaborate, we share as much as possible, we don't duplicate here. So during this early stage, a lot of things that we can learn, especially with these technology partners: how do we share the network, how do we optimize using this spectrum with each other so we don't actually over-invest? So, as a country, we can invest smartly in this new technology," said Mohamad Idham Nawawi, CEO of Celcom Axiata, a major mobile operator in Malaysia.

The 5G demonstrations and trials are expected to bring the benefits of the new technology to diverse industries including agriculture, oil and gas, tourism, transportation and education.
