Storyline

China has reminded NBA Commissioner Adam Silver once again not to deliberately confuse national sovereignty with the freedom of speech, according to a commentary released by China Media Group (CMG) on Wednesday.

After Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey refused to apologize for his erroneous comments on Hong Kong and is free from any punishment by the NBA, Silver has publicly expressed support for Morey's right of "speech freedom".

The sports channel of the China Central Television (CCTV) under the CMG issued another statement on Tuesday to suspend the broadcast arrangement for the NBA pre-season games in China.

Spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry Geng Shuang warned on the same day that "Lacking knowledge of the minds and hearts of the Chinese people while trying to build communication and cooperation won't work."

Obviously, people like Silver are deliberately misinterpreting concepts and misleading the public with "speech freedom" as a shield. The so-called speech freedom is never absolute. Any speech that challenges national sovereignty and social stability is beyond the scope of the freedom of speech. The sophistry of Silver and Morey only shows their ulterior motives and arrogance and insolence, the commentary said.

It is known that as the first U.S. sports league that stepped into China, the NBA has gained a huge success over the past 30 years in its commercial operation in China, and has become one of the important bridges that serve cultural exchanges between China and the United States. Unfortunately however, today, 30 years later, the head of the NBA has the audacity to challenge the minds and hearts of the Chinese people and connive at remarks that challenge China's sovereignty. The hard-won market over 30 years is undermined by people like Silver in just three days. Will the NBA management remain indifferent and continue to let those people mess things up?

While talking repeatedly the value of the huge Chinese market with 1.4 billion people on the one hand, they do not respect and cherish the national interest and national sentiment of the 1.4 billion Chinese people on the other. If people like Silver are still sober-minded, they should realize their errors and turn back from the wrong path, retract their erroneous remarks that offend China, and apologize to the Chinese fans sincerely, the commentary said.

However, if they insist on the wrong path and use error making to punish themselves, then let them go, the commentary said.
