A workstation for hybrid rice breeding was inaugurated in Guanyang County, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, on Wednesday.
The workstation will be led by Yuan Longping, an agronomist known as China's "father of hybrid rice".
Yuan and his team will focus on breeding high-yielding hybrid rice strains adaptive to various environments. They aim to develop rice strains that can achieve a yield of more than 1,200 kg per mu (about 0.07 hectares), or 18 tonnes per hectare.
Yuan said at the unveiling ceremony that his workstation is located in Guanyang because the county has a very high yield of super hybrid rice and ratoon rice.
"I hope the experience of Guanyang can be promoted across Guangxi, so as to increasingly lift the yield of rice here," the agronomist said.
The county saw its weighted average yield of its super hybrid rice reach 1,005.62 kg per mu in the first season, marking three consecutive years breaking 1,000 kg per mu.
Chinese President Xi Jinping on September 29 presented the Medal of the Republic to Yuan for his contributions to the country's food security.
