Storyline

It is of great significance for the Syrian government to deploy forces in the Kurdish-held territory in terms of restoring territorial integrity and upholding the regional security, said a Syrian expert in international politics.

The Syrian forces entered the city of Manbij in northern Syria on Monday for the first time since losing it in 2012.

The move came after claims that the Syrian Kurdish forces reached a deal with the government for the deployment, after the United States abandoned the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces to the relentless bombardment by Turkish artillery and jets.

On Wednesday, Turkey launched the military offensive dubbed "Operation Peace Spring" against the Kurdish forces in northern Syria.

Hamidi Abdullah, the expert, said it is a crucial step for the Syrian government forces to enter the Kurdish-held area.

"The area (controlled by Kurdish armed forces) is rich in water, agricultural, oil and gas resources. If the Syrian government forces gain control of this area, it is a crucial step for restoring the control over key resources," he said.

Throughout the Syrian war, Manbij was first captured by rebels in 2012, later overrun by the Islamic State (IS) in 2014 and finally captured by the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in 2016.

Last year, the United States, which supports the Kurdish forces, and Turkey agreed on a plan to empty the area of the Kurdish People's Protection Units (YPG) fighters within 90 days, which Ankara said it didn't happen.

Ahead of the current Turkish military offensive, U.S. President Donald Trump decided to withdraw forces from two posts in the area. On Sunday, Washington said it will withdraw its remaining 1,000.
