Storyline


Chinese Vice Premier Han Zheng met with Singaporean Deputy Prime Minister Heng Swee Keat Tuesday in southwest China's Municipality of Chongqing and co-chaired the four bilateral cooperation mechanism meetings.

The meetings are the 15th China-Singapore Joint Council for Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) Meeting, the 20th China-Singapore Suzhou Industrial Park Joint Steering Council Meeting, the 11th China-Singapore Tianjin Eco-City Joint Steering Council Meeting, and the third China-Singapore (Chongqing) Demonstration Initiative on Strategic Connectivity Joint Steering Council Meeting.

During their meeting, Han, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, said the China-Singapore relations are at a new starting point of building on the past and preparing for the future, with a good development momentum.

He said that the leaders of the two countries have reached a series of important consensuses and provided a strategic guide to the development of the bilateral relations. The two sides should see to it that the consensuses are put in place and employ the mechanism meeting platforms to deepen the pragmatic cooperation in all areas. Under the current situation, the two sides should make concerted efforts to resist the back current of unilateralism and protectionism, and stand firm to safeguard multilateralism and the international system based on the international law and with the United Nations at the core.

Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Heng said Singapore likes to work together with China to lift the bilateral relations up to a higher level and jointly safeguard the rule-based multilateral trade system and jointly deal with global challenges.

After the meeting, Han and Heng co-chaired the four meetings. The two side reviewed in an all-round manner how the high-level consensus were implemented and how the pragmatic cooperation progressed, with focus put on pushing a high-quality joint construction of the Belt and Road and on promoting regional development cooperation, supporting multilateralism and exchanging views on free trade.

When planning the aspects and focus of their next-step cooperation, the two sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in interconnection, financial support, tripartite cooperation, law and justice, increased investment in the construction of sea-land transportation channel, upgrade key cooperation projects, strengthen multilateral economic and trade cooperation, and the construction of an open world economic system.

The two sides announced that the upgraded version of the bilateral Free Trade Agreement will take effect on Oct 16.
