He said both sides of the Taiwan Strait should be well connected. He stated both sides can first build new links between Taiwan's Kinmen and Matsu islands and the mainland's coastal Fujian Province in the form of water, electricity, and gas supply lines, and through the building of bridges. We want to bring benefits to the Taiwan compatriots just as what we do for the mainland compatriot."

7. SOUNDBITE (Chinese) Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman, Taiwan Affairs Office of State Council:
"The Fuzhou-Matsu bridge and the Xiamen-Kinmen bridge are key components of the 'Taiwan Strait Channel'. Pushing forward the building of the two bridges is a key step of implementing people-centered development philosophy and meeting the livelihood demands of people in Matsu and Kinmen. It is a good move for the Taiwan compatriots to share development opportunities of the mainland and to promote integrated development of cross-Strait economic and social development. Relevant departments of the mainland have started preliminary study on the building of the Fuzhou-Matsu bridge and the Xiamen-Kinmen bridge. People of insight from across the Strait offer suggestions for this to accelerate the building of the bridges and benefit cross-Strait compatriots."

"The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities unilaterally damaged political foundation for cross-Strait consultation, attempted to obstruct cross-Strait communication and cooperation on economy and culture, stood opposite to interests of the Taiwan compatriots, and deliberately hampered development of Matsu and Kinmen. Such attitudes and actions are contrary to the will of the people."

Storyline

The attempt of the Taiwan authorities to curb development goes against the will of the Taiwan compatriots, said Ma Xiaoguang, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council.

Ma said this on Wednesday after the Taiwan authorities alleged that a Wednesday seminar that gathered experts from across the Taiwan Strait on building bridges connecting the mainland's Fujian Province with Taiwan "is a move to split Taiwan."

Ma stated the Taiwan authorities unilaterally hurt the political foundation for cross-Strait consultation and run counter to interests of the Taiwan compatriots.

"On Jan. 2, general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Xi Jinping delivered an important speech at a ceremony to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the issuing of a 'Message to Compatriots in Taiwan'. He said both sides of the Taiwan Strait should be well connected.
