Storyline

The northern section of the China-Russia East-Route Natural Gas Pipeline project was completed Wednesday.

Extending 1,067 kilometers in northeast China, the northern section of the pipeline project starts in Heilongjiang Province, connecting the city of Heihe to Changling County in Jilin Province.

China will officially start receiving a large amount of natural gas from Russia through the new pipeline on Dec 1.

"All of this project, including the main materials like steel and steel pipes, key devices like compressors, 56-inch Class 900 automatic welded ball valves, and the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system which is the brain of the pipeline, are made in China. We have achieved 100 percent automatic welding, 100 percent AUT (automatic ultrasonic testing) and 100 percent mechanical anti-corrosion field joint coating," said Jiang Changliang, general manager of the PetroChina Pipeline Company.

The project is China's first intelligent pipeline project. It adopts advanced technology such as big data, cloud computing, Internet of Things and artificial intelligence to improve efficiency.

"When designing and building the project, we promote informatization, automation and the application of intelligent technology. After it is completed, the project needs 30 percent less operators, so the pipeline can be more intelligent, efficient and beneficial," said Jiang.

The 3,371-km-long Chinese section of China-Russia east-route natural gas pipeline starts in Heihe and terminates in Shanghai. Construction began in June 2015 and will be completed in 2020.

The Russian part of the pipeline, which began construction in Sept. 2014, links the Kovyktin and Chayandin gas fields in Siberia with the eastern port city of Vladivostok, covering nearly 4,000 kilometers.

The pipeline represents a major energy cooperation project between China and Russia.
