China's first automatic driving heavy-duty train started operation on Thursday in northwest China, and is capable of carrying over 10,000 tons of goods.
The first train consists of 108 carriages, with a total length of 1,530 meters, and carries over 10,000 tons of coal. The train departed from Shenmubei Station in northwest China's Shaanxi Province and arrived in Shuozhou City, north China's Shanxi Province.
The Shenmubei-Shuozhou Railway is an important channel for China's coal transportation. As a railway for heavy-duty trains, it goes through a tough route covering many bridges and tunnels, which adds difficulty to maintaining the trains' safety and stableness. To solve the problem and reduce labor costs, China National Energy Investment Group (CHN ENERGY) launched the automatic driving project.
This train is a pioneer in several heavy-duty train technologies in China: the first to achieve automatic driving of a 10,000-ton trains; the first application of carrier networks in heavy-duty railways; the first application of foreign bodies intrusion detection systems on heavy-duty railways.
"Our locomotive achieves automatic driving in all sections, from automatic wake-up, automatic maintenance test, to receiving signals, changing routes and carriage hitching. It even automatically departs and arrives," said Nan Jie, general manager of CHN ENERGY Shenmubei-Shuozhou Railway branch.
