Former International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief Christine Lagarde is to officially assume office as president of the European Central Bank (ECB, starting November 1 after winning overall majority of votes of the European Council at the two-day European Union (EU) summit as announced Friday.
Leaders of the EU, the European Parliament and the ECB's Governing Council showed their support to Largade's eight-year tenure as the ECB's new president.
Lagarde, a 63-year-old French national, will become the first woman to lead the ECB. She is set to replace Mario Draghi, whose eight-year term ends on October 31.
On July 5, 2011, Lagarde became the 11th managing director of the IMF, and was the first woman to hold this position. She was later elected to serve a second five-year term in her post, which started in July 2016. Prior to joining the IMF, Lagarde, was a lawyer and turned to politics in 2005, serving as France's finance minister from 2007 to 2011.
While Lagarde was in office in the IMF, the troika including the IMF, ECB and the European Commission jointly aided members of the Eurozone including Greece, that were affected greatly by the debt crisis.
Different from the former three heads of the ECB who were central bankers in their countries before taking office, Lagarde's background is slightly different as she used to practicing law. But, analysts are still expecting Lagarde to be able to safeguard independence of the ECB and balance benefits and attitude of Eurozone members with her experience and influence in political circles.
