Storyline

Chinese State Councilor and Defense Minister Wei Fenghe said on Monday at the 9th Beijing Xiangshan Forum that China's development is not a threat to other countries.

Wei made the statement in his opening address at the Beijing Xiangshan Forum, which will last from Sunday to Tuesday.

"The Chinese nation is a peace-loving nation. We do not have or recognize or accept the logic that a strong power is bound to seek hegemony. China's development does not pose any threat to any other country. No matter at what stage of development China may be in, China will never seek hegemony or expansion or the establishment of sphere of influence," said the Chinese defense minister.

He said that interfering in other countries' internal affairs is the real cause of regional conflicts.

"All countries, big or small, strong or weak, rich or poor, are equals and all have the right to independently choose their own development paths. Having a hand in the regional affairs, interfering in the internal affairs of other countries, fanning up color revolution and even attempting to subvert lawful governments of other countries are the true sources of regional wars and turmoils," said the Chinese defense minister.

More than 650 representatives from some 70 delegations are attending the Forum.

With the theme "Maintaining International Order and Promoting Peace in the Asia-Pacific," the three-day event will have four plenary sessions and eight panel discussions.

This year's forum will cover a wide range of topics, such as relations among major powers, the interests of small and medium-sized countries and international security, maritime security and the influence of artificial intelligence on international security and future warfare.

Initiated in 2006, the forum has been dedicated to promoting exchanges and cooperation among defense authorities, armed forces, international organizations and scholars.
