Storyline

The greater presence of U.S. exhibitors at the ongoing six-day second China International Import Expo (CIIE) in comparison with that of the last CIIE has shown that U.S. exporters are passionate about tapping into the lucrative Chinese market.

This year, nearly 200 U.S. enterprises have signed up to the CIIE, nearly a 20 percent increase from last year.

U.S. pharmaceutical company Baxco, one of the companies holding exhibitions at the California Pavilion -- a booth set up for companies from the largest state of U.S. -- is a newcomer to the CIIE.

Specializing in research and development of plant-based cures and pharmaceutical ingredients, the company says they look forward to seizing this opportunity to bring their finest products to Chinese consumers.

"It was clear to us that this was our moment to come out and to share with China, what we are doing and to see if we can learn a lot from the Chinese people, the Chinese consumers and Chinese businesspeople, in terms of what their needs are, particularly with regard to health and wellness, which is where we specialize," said Mark Alexander, chief innovation officer of Baxco.

Among the repeat U.S. visitors to the expo was multinational conglomerate Honeywell. With strong optimism about the Chinese market, the company has brought more than 30 leading technologies to the expo, including solutions on connectivity, safety and energy efficiency.

"We still have a very positive outlook, although there are some turbulence, and also some conflicts in between [the two sides]. But we hope the current discussion will come out (with) a good outcome. And we also hope both countries would reach a win-win agreement," said Scott Zhang, president of Honeywell China.

Despite the trade frictions between the world's two largest economies, business cooperation between the two sides is still highly valued by companies from both countries, he added.

The second CIIE runs from Tuesday to Sunday in Shanghai, with the participation of guests and representatives from more than 170 countries and regions around the world .

The first CIIE was held in Shanghai on November 5-10, 2018.
