The United Arab Emirates' recent discovery of new oil and gas reserves will strengthen its position as a global energy player and play a positive role in the international crude oil market, said a local economist in Dubai during an interview with China Television Network (CCTV) on Thursday.
The Supreme Petroleum Council (SPC), the highest energy decision-making authority of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), announced on Monday major increases in Abu Dhabi oil and gas reserves.
The increase in reserves is estimated at 7 billion barrels of crude oil and 58 trillion standard cubic feet of conventional gas, which moves the UAE from seventh to sixth in global oil and gas reserves rankings.
Economist Dani Ibrahim said that the new discovery will effectively promote the UAE's further exploration of undeveloped resources and have an impact on its overall foreign trade development strategy. At the same time, the UAE will play a more active role in maintaining the stability of the global oil market.
"The international crude oil market can benefit from it. So looking globally, the UAE's new discovery and new initiative can play a positive role in the future," said the economist.
