Storyline

Economic statistics for the first three quarters of this year showed that China has made considerable progress in economic transformation and upgrading.

In south China's Guangdong Province, the proportion of advanced manufacturing industry increased by 5 percent year on year from January to September, accounting for 55.9 percent of the whole industry sector.

Jiangsu Province in east China also saw rapid development of high-tech industry in the first three quarters, with a total of 17,000 companies applying for the status of high and new technology enterprises, which is six times larger than in the same period of last year. Its high-tech manufacturing industry grew 7.6 percent year on year, which is 1.8 percentage points higher than the growth rate of the whole industry.

"We saw that high and new technology enterprises, as the major market entities, have posted explosive growth. I think this is the source of confidence for Jiangsu to adjust its economic structure, and provides us with a fundamental guarantee to start the new stage of high-quality development," said He Yu, deputy director of the Regional Modernization Research Center under the Jiangsu Provincial Academy of Social Sciences.

In east China's Shandong Province, though the secondary industry just increased by 2.5 percent in the first three quarters of this year, its high-tech manufacturing industry grew over 10 percent. Its service industry accounted for 50.8 percent of the whole economy, contributing 77 percent to GDP growth.

Provinces like Anhui, Hubei and Shanxi also achieved fruitful results in industrial transformation and upgrading. In the first three quarters of this year, Anhui's high and new technology industries and strategic emerging industries both maintained a two-digit growth rate.

"Though the growth rate of the whole industry fell back, its quality improved considerably, which is especially manifested by the increased contribution of new economy to economic growth, the huge growth of new products, and the improvement of industrial efficiency," said Zhao Jinbao, deputy director of the Anhui Statistics Bureau.

In southwest China, the industrial added value of Yunnan Province and Guizhou Province witnessed a growth of 9.3 percent and 9.6 percent respectively, which is nearly four percentage points higher than the average speed of the whole country.
