Storyline

A land-sea express passage launched by China and three Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries linking a Greek port and landlocked Hungary has greatly bolstered cooperation between Asia and Europe after five-year operation.

The China-Europe Land-Sea Express Line was started in 2014 by China, Serbia, Hungary and Macedonia. It is an extension and upgraded version of the planned Hungary-Serbia railway running through Belgrade and Budapest to connect China.

Build by China's COSCO Shipping Group, the transport route links the Greek sea port of Piraeus in the south and Budapest in the north, stringing the Macedonian capital of Skopje and Belgrade. It helps cut transport time for commodity flows from Asia to Europe by seven to ten days compared with the traditional route by way of Germany's Hamburger and the Netherlands' Rotterdam.

"We started from 100 trains back in 2014 and, within only five years, we will have reached by the end of 2019 to 1,000 trains and reaching over 80,000 TEUs which contributes significantly to the Greek government and Greek economy," said Dionysis Boulantzas, deputy manager of the Logistics Infrastructure and Rail Development Department with Ocean Rail Logistics S.A.

A Beijing-based international trade and logistics company has been engaged in shipping Serbia's copper products to China through this express line. The company transports over 2,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) containers.

"The China-Europe Land-Sea Express Line allows us not only to transport Chinese goods to Serbia but also bring back local goods from Serbia to China," said Wang Xin, managing director of CRM International (Beijing) Co., Ltd.

In April, Greece joined the 16+1 cooperation mechanism between China and Central and Eastern European Countries as a full member, creating new opportunities for the express line as well as for China-Europe relations.

The express route is expected to transport 100,000 TEU containers by 2020 and enable a faster access to European markets.
