Storyline

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Greek counterpart, Prokopis Pavlopoulos, agreed on Monday to contribute the wisdom of ancient Eastern and Western civilizations to building a community with a shared future for mankind.

To that end, the two presidents agreed during their meeting in Athens to consolidate political mutual trust, deepen practical cooperation and promote dialog among civilizations.

Xi stressed that exchanges and mutual learning are essential to the development of civilizations. The China-Greece friendship lies not only in cooperation between the two countries, but also dialog between the two civilizations.

Noting that the world is undergoing profound changes unseen in a century, Xi called on the two countries to make joint efforts and deepen cooperation to promote exchanges among civilizations that embrace each other to promote inter-cultural exchanges which transcend time and space, advocate a more just and equitable international order, so that China and Greece, the two countries with ancient civilizations, will flourish in the new era.

China and Greece should set an example of friendliness, mutual trust, mutual benefits and win-win results, Xi said.

Xi urged to strengthen exchanges at various levels between the two countries, deepen political mutual trust, and continue to firmly support each other on issues of core interests and major concerns.

The president called on the two countries to jointly build the Belt and Road and make the China-Europe Land-Sea Express Route an important passage for goods transportation and connectivity between the two sides.

Cultural and other exchanges in fields such as the Olympics should be enhanced to facilitate personnel flows, Xi said.

China and Greece should set an example of being open and down-to-earth to advance China-Europe cooperation, Xi said.

China is ready to work together with Greece to push forward the China-Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC) cooperation and the development of China-Europe relations, Xi said.

China and Greece should set an example of cultural exchanges and civilizations interaction, Xi said.

China never seeks hegemony, nor does it favor zero-sum games, because Chinese people don't have such a cultural gene or such an ambition. China's development will always mean a growth of peaceful force for the world, Xi said.

China and Greece, both supporting exchanges and mutual learning instead of clashes between civilizations, should continue to jointly build a world where different civilizations and people of different countries live in harmony, so as to better contribute to the world peace and human progress, Xi said.

China and Greece should set an example of coordinating to uphold multilateralism, Xi said.

The Chinese president called on the two countries to enhance coordination on major international and regional affairs and strengthen cooperation under the United Nations (UN) and other multilateral frameworks to build an open world economy and jointly build a community with a shared future for mankind.

Pavlopoulos, on his part, said Greece firmly opposes the so-called "Clash of Civilization" fallacy, as civilization in its true sense should not produce clash, nor can clash solve any problem. It is ridiculous and detrimental for a country to form its policies on the basis of the "Clash of Civilization" fallacy.

Whether it is China's historical and cultural traditions or the fact that China is becoming more open, progressive and developed, China has effectively countered the fallacies of "clash of civilizations" and "power leading to hegemony", Pavlopoulos said.

In a world facing so many uncertainties, China has offered very helpful reference and solutions to solving global issues by upholding peace, harmony and balance. Greece will continue to firmly support China to safeguard its core interests and is looking forward to strengthen cooperation with China in fields including economy, trade and culture, and build the Belt and Road with China in an active manner, the president said.

Pavlopoulos said he believes Xi's visit to Greece will bring the Greece-China relations to a new era and a new height.

Greece stands ready to make continuous efforts with China to push forward the Europe-China relations and CEEC-China cooperation, and contribute to international justice and equity and human development and progress, the Greek president said.

Xi also laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and attended a welcome ceremony held by Pavlopoulos on Monday.

Xi arrived in Athens Sunday for a three-day state visit to the European country.

Greece is the first stop in Xi's ongoing Europe and Latin America tour, which will also take him to Brazil. He will attend the 11th BRICS Summit in Brasilia from November 13 to 14.
