Storyline

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan attended a grand welcoming banquet hosted by Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos on Monday.

Pavlopoulos extended warm welcome to Xi and Peng on behalf of the Greek government and people.

As two ancient civilizations, Greece and China have enjoyed a long history of friendly exchanges, he said.

Greece believes that true civilizations neither clash with nor set up barriers for one another, he said, instead they communicate with and learn from one another, co-exist peacefully and jointly dedicate to human peace and progress.

In this respect, China has set an example for the world, he said.

Calling it the birthplace of Western civilization, Xi said Greece has an indelible influence on the progress of human civilization.

China and Greece have always respected, understood and supported each other on their core interests and major concerns since the two countries established diplomatic relations 47 years ago, Xi said.

The great Greek people gave birth to the Olympics, and the Olympic motto of "faster, higher, stronger" applies to developing China-Greece relations as well, Xi said.

Xi called on the two countries to drive the development of their comprehensive strategic partnership with "two wheels," namely practical cooperation and dialogue among civilizations, so as to make new contributions to world peace and common prosperity.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and his wife, among others, were also present at the banquet.
