Heavy snow and strong winds battered Emin County of Tacheng Prefecture in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region on Friday evening, bringing down temperatures and disrupting road traffic across the county.
With visibility cut to less than 10 meters due to drifting snow, local police quickly put traffic control measures in place at key highway sections across the region including the Kuytun–Tacheng Expressway. As the weather worsened, traffic police received a number of emergency calls from motorists trapped on the affected roads, and immediately launched a rescue plan.
After four hours of efforts, police reached and rescued 58 occupants of 28 stricken vehicles along the impacted roads. By 13:20 on Saturday, the traffic control measures were lifted as conditions eased.
The extreme wintry weather has also hit Altay Prefecture including the Jeminay Port in northern Xinjiang since Friday evening, with drifting snow causing issues.
To speed up the clearance process, the frontier inspection station temporarily extended inspection services and opened up green channels to expedite the entry and exit of personnel and vehicles.
