Storyline

The giant panda Bei Bei born in the United States arrived in his native home in southwest China's Sichuan Province Wednesday afternoon after a 16-hour non-stop flight from Washington D.C..

The panda seemed to be a little anxious and on high alert without stopping walking or climbing high after moving into an isolation room at the Bifengxia base of the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Ya'an City.

He will not meet the public until after a one-month quarantine check at the base.

Bei Bei was born at the U.S. Smithsonian's National Zoo on Aug. 22, 2015, where he spent the last four years, and now weighs around 113 kg. His parents, mother Mei Xiang and father Tian Tian, have been living at the zoo since 2000.

The name Bei Bei literally stands for "treasure" or "precious" in Chinese. It was jointly selected by former first lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, and Peng Liyuan, wife of Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Bei Bei's home return is in line with the regulations of a cooperative breeding agreement between overseas institutions that receive pandas on lease terms and the China Wildlife Conservation Association, which require all panda cubs born there must return to China after their fourth birthday.

Now there are still 32 pandas living overseas.
