The construction crews from both countries had worked in forbidding environment and overcome hardships and accomplished this task in a high-level and high-quality manner, showing the world the superb craftsmanship of major powers and demonstrating the fruitful results of China-Russia cooperation. I hereby wish the two sides can work harder and jointly build more key projects like the China-Russia east-route natural gas pipeline, so as to boost the development of the two countries and better benefit the two peoples."

Storyline

Chinese President Xi Jinping held a video call with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on Monday afternoon and the two heads of state jointly witnessed the launching ceremony of the China-Russia east-route natural gas pipeline, setting a new milestone for deepened energy cooperation between the two countries.

At the ceremony in Beijing attended by Chinese and Russian officials, Xi noted that he and Putin witnessed the two sides sign the cooperation agreement for the project back in 2014, adding that Chinese and Russian companies have been cooperating closely over the past five years in carrying out the project.

He hailed the engineers and construction crews from both sides for their efforts and for accomplishing the tasks with high quality, which he said demonstrates the fruitful results of China-Russia cooperation.

He expressed the hope that two sides can work harder and jointly build more key projects like the China-Russia east-route natural gas pipeline, so as to help boost the development of their respective countries and better benefit the two peoples.

Putin, who witnessed the ceremony in Sochi, said this year not only marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between Russia and China, but also marks the official start of Russian gas delivery to China via the east-route natural gas pipeline, adding that launch of the gas pipeline will push the comprehensive strategic coordination between Russia and China in the energy sector to a new level.

The China-Russia east-route natural gas pipeline was officially put into operation, after Xi issued his command at the ceremony.

The project connects the world's largest natural gas supplier and the largest potential natural gas consumer market. It is the first natural gas pipeline between China and Russia and also the first cross-border gas pipeline in northeast China.

The 5,111-km-long Chinese section of the pipeline, together with the 3,000-km-long Russian part, is scheduled to provide China with 5 billion cubic meters of Russian gas in 2020 and the amount is expected to increase to 38 billion cubic meters annually from 2024, under a 30-year contract worth 400 billion U.S. dollars signed between the China National Petroleum Corp (CNPC) and Russian gas giant Gazprom in May 2014.
