Doing the right thing sometimes means putting morality above even family. An old man in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region made this difficult decision when he turned in his terrorist grandson, who had killed a person for so-called "jihad".
The China Global Television Network (CGTN) recorded the moment and aired the video footage on Thursday in the documentary "Fighting Terrorism in Xinjiang".
On Sept.18, 2015, terrorists attacked a local coal mine in the Baicheng County, killing 16 people, including three policemen and injuring 18 others.
Turghun, a participant and also the only survivor among the gang members, recalled the horrible incident.
"They told us to conduct 'jihad' and 'jihad' will help us enter paradise. I was handed a knife; each of us was given a knife. You just keep hacking, they told us, by killing you will become martyrs and enter paradise. Later I killed someone who ran ahead of me," he said.
His grandfather Mollaturdi Niyaz, 74, said at the moment he had no other option but turn his grandson in.
"I had an iron bar with me on the way to the police station, ready to strike him down if he went back on his word. He just cried all the way," he said.
The documentary contains never-before-seen footage showing the tragedies and atrocities committed by terrorists in the past in Xinjiang.
