Storyline

Members of the East Turkistan Islamic Movement (ETIM) admitted to meeting Osama bin Laden and to having ties to al-Qaeda in a documentary aired by the China Global Television Network (CGTN).

The recording revealed that foreign extremists were remotely controlling their actions, teaching them how to evade reconnaissance and attack helicopters.

Numerous sources have confirmed that the "East Turkistan Islamic Movement" has close contact with other terrorist groups.

Leading ETIM member Rozi described their encounters with Osama bin Laden in 1997. During the encounter, members asked for specialized terrorist training and economic assistance.

"There were four of us who met with Osama bin Laden. We were quite straightforward in describing what kind of an organization we were trying to set up and told him about the movement. Our first request was that their training base should offer special training for our members, not the regular variety. Secondly, we asked for economic assistance. We just made these two requests," said Rozi.

Intelligence sources say since its founding, the ETIM has made Xinjiang the primary target of its attacks.

With the help of al-Qaeda, the ETIM recruited terrorists and religious extremists in Xinjiang.

The recruits were sent to war zones for so-called "battlefield practice" before returning to China.

"We spent three months there in total and learned how to use weapons and make bombs. And we learned some theories," said Memet, an ETIM member.

"The intensity of training was so high that it could kill," said Mutellip Qasim, an ETIM military organizer.
