Storyline

Groups of stranded Chinese tourists have been offered assistance by the Chinese consulate in Christchurch after they were left trapped by floods, landslides, and severe storms which hit New Zealand's South Island during the weekend.

An intense rainstorm on Friday night saw the Rangitata river burst its banks, flooding roads and bridges which cut off towns and left an estimated 1,000 foreign tourists trapped.

Most of them were left stuck on the relatively remote west coast towns of Fox Glacier and Franz Josef.

After local authorities declared a state of emergency, the Consulate-General of China in Christchurch immediately contacted related organizations to locate any Chinese tourists or overseas students who were affected and provide necessary consular assistance.
