Storyline

The Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Macao Garrison has been a strong and loyal defender of Macao people since the region returned to the motherland in 1999.

Over the past 20 years, as a staunch defender and exemplary practitioner of the principle of "one country, two systems," the PLA officers and soldiers stationed in Macao have performed their defense duties in strict accordance with the Basic Law and the Macao Garrison Law.

To better protect Macao's stability, soldiers overcame the difficulties of limited drill space and developed advanced simulation systems to sharpen their skills.

"We are stationed in the city, so our tasks are more likely to be carried out in the city. We will imitate the landscape of city and improve our capacities according to city dwellings," said Li Yangchun, a soldier of a special force unit of the PLA Macao Garrison.

"We conduct exercises mainly depending on our online resources, like developing simulation systems. We can't drive armored vehicles onto the streets for exercises, so we bring in simulation system to our exercises, which is of great help," said Li Jian, director of operation and training department of the PLA Macao Garrison.

To better fit into the particular environment of Macao, soldiers need to master special skills apart from their normal tasks.

Zhang Jianhua is a female soldier stationed in Macao. She and her comrades took painstaking efforts to learn how to ride motor tricycles on two wheels, which is a quite practical skill in Macao.

"When you drive on narrow country roads, there is no enough room for all three wheels. Then you can drive on only two wheels. Also, if you have enemies shooting on your side, you can use the sidecar to protect yourself," said Zhang.

Zhang recalled the tough time when she practiced the driving skill. For many times, her hands were blistered and she felt her whole body is aching.

Trainings at home are far more enough for soldiers, the Macao Garrison soldiers also take an active part in international joint drills. In 2018, soldiers in Macao participated in the "Peace and Friendship 2018" joint military drill in Malaysia. Representatives from Macao completed their tasks in 11 courses outstandingly.

"Walking out [to cooperate with international armies] is an important way of training, especially to have joint drills on anti-terrorism and special operations. This will help our soldiers to better utilize their skills and knowledge according to different situations," said Li.

During the 20 years, the PLA forces stationed in Macao performed four defense functions of guarding against and resisting aggression, undertaking defense duties, managing military installations and undertaking military affairs related to foreign affairs.

The PLA troops also actively participated in public service activities, including 18 times of voluntary tree planting, over 800,000 milliliter donating blood and over 500,000 yuan (about 71,100 U.S. dollars) in charitable donations.

The PLA Macao Garrison was set up in March 1999 in Zhuhai, a neighboring coastal city in south China's Guangdong Province, and entered Macao on Dec 20, 1999, as China resumed exercise of its sovereignty over the former Portuguese colony.
