Storyline


A picture exhibition was held in Geneva's Palace of Nations to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Macao's return to China, showing visitors Macao's splendid achievements in the period.

Around 150 people, including foreign envoys and diplomats as well as visitors from all walks of life, were on spot admiring pictures that focus on reflecting the successful practice of the "One Country, Two Systems" principle and the Macao Special Administrative Region Basic Law.

Chen Xu, Permanent Representative of China to UN Office at Geneva, addressed the opening of the exhibition, saying that Macao has obtained rapid growth in the past 20 years, with the per capita gross regional product (GRP) ranking first in Asia and second in the world, and also becoming one of the world's fastest-growing regions.

According to the International Monetary Fund, Macao is expected to be a city with the highest GDP per capita in 2020.

"For the last 20 years, our compatriots in Macao have been masters in their own house. They have elected five chief executives and six legislative assemblies successfully. Macao people are administering Macao and enjoying broader democratic rights and freedom than any times in history," said Chen.

Foreign envoys and representatives of international organizations said the exhibited pictures vividly showed the facts of the Macao's prosperity after its return to China, and how successful the implementation of the "One Country, Two Systems" principle is, all of which will facilitate the international society's better understanding of Macao and more exchanges and cooperation with the region.

"Look at these beautiful photos. I've never been there. Of course they give us a lot of interesting and practical information about how you can develop the industrial economy and prosperity of one relatively small island which is closely connected to the mainland. The population must be happy," said Vaqif Sadiqov, Permanent Representative from Azerbaijan to UN Office at Geneva.

"I think the exhibition clearly show the 'One Country, Two Systems' principle is a great decision of China," said Zhao Houlin, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunications Union.
