Storyline

A culture night themed on southwest China's Sichuan Province on Monday presented the most characteristic elements of the Chinese region to London and helped the British people to get a better understanding of the Chinese culture as a whole.

Sichuan, home to the world's most famous animal giant panda, found the cute species at the center of attention, as always, at the exhibition at the British Natural History Museum.

Another piece of Chinese culture on display is the Sanxingdui Ruins. Listed among China's top 10 archaeological findings of the 20th century and covering an area of 12 square kilometers, the ruins, first discovered in 1929, are believed to be remnants of the Shu Kingdom that disappeared under mysterious circumstances some 3,000 years ago. They reflect the diverse origins of Chinese civilization.

"Some of the archaeology of things that have been found, it's been really interesting as well. So, it's lovely to be in the British museum, the history museum," said London resident Gemma.

"It's been a wonderful evening. And I think we've learned so much about Sichuan Province. I think, because with the natural history museum, in some ways, I think we are so excited to hear about the panda," said Clare Matterson, director of engagement with the British Natural History Museum.

Sichuan has been exhibiting its cultural treasures, including the giant panda, the ancient ruins and its folk crafts around the world. By holding such activities in top museums around the globe, it hopes to promote its culture overseas and introduce its charm to the rest of the world.
