Storyline

China supports necessary reform of the World Trade Organization (WTO), and will make new contributions to stability and growth of the global economy, Chinese Ministry of Commerce Spokesman Gao Feng said on Thursday.

Speaking at a regular press conference in Beijing, Gao recalled that China has made great contributions to the growth of the global trade in goods to 39.34 trillion U.S. dollars in 2018 from 12.6 trillion U.S. dollars in 2001, the year in which China entered the WTO.

"While unswervingly expanding opening-up over the past 18 years, China has been achieving fast economic development and integrating its development into that of the world. In the meantime, the world economy has been provided with a window of opportunity amid the development of China, which has become a main driving force and stabilizer of the global economic growth. China has made the largest contribution to the growth of the global economy," said the spokesman.

He said China will continue to play a constructive role in safeguarding the rules-based multilateral trading system.
