Storyline

Residents in impoverished counties in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region are taking part in specialized agriculture schemes to shake off poverty as China ramps up poverty alleviation measures.

One such region is Shache County in Kashgar Prefecture, where many villages have found unique ways to develop their economy, capitalizing on local geological advantages.

Paifang Village, which has abundant water resources has turned to crayfish breeding to boost its local economy. Local authorities have invited professionals to teach villagers important skills.

The number of crayfish has now reached 150,000 in Paifang Village, with the annual value of production exceeding 800,000 yuan (about 114,396 U.S. dollars).

"South Xinjiang has a lot of sunshine, even during the cold winter. The duration and intensity of sunshine can keep the water at a proper temperature," said Chen Zhun, president of an agricultural technology company in Xinjiang.

"In the next stage, we will expand the breeding scale and include more low-income families into the farmers' cooperative. We will also increase efforts on developing farm houses," said Li Hongqi, leader of a working team of the Xijiang Uygur Autonomous Region Development and Reform Commission in Shache.

Akto County in the Kizilsu Kirgiz Autonomous Prefecture, which has abundant sunshine and favorable temperatures has also capitalized on these conditions to grow mushrooms.

More than 6 hectares of edible mushrooms have been set up in the county, producing 2,000 tonnes of mushrooms annually and offering jobs to more than 100 low-income villagers.

"I have worked here for more than one month. My monthly salary is 2,600 yuan (about 371 U.S. dollars). We have a 20 yuan (about 2.86 U.S. dollars) subsidy every day. I have learned a lot of skills and I am very happy," Ajigul Kadir, an employee at a local mushroom industry company.
