Storyline

Various cultures continue to thrive in Macao 20 years after the region returned to the motherland thanks to a series of culture-boosting policies introduced and implemented by the Special Administrative Region (SAR) government.

At the age of 17, Mai Hsiao Jou has seen her reputation grow with her neighbors as an experienced Cantonese opera actress. Each Thursday for eight years, Mai will rehearse Cantonese opera regardless of rain or sunshine.

"When I was in third grade, my grandma took me to watch the Cantonese opera for a whole day which I thought was pleasant to hear and special and I didn't even want to go home. This is our unique Chinese culture, with its beauty there, I want to continue learning, because I really like it. I will love it for my whole life," said Mai.

Including Cantonese opera, Macao has eight intangible cultural heritage items added to the national intangible cultural heritage list. In 2013, the law on the protection of cultural heritage was enacted in Macao, which continuously upgraded the protection of traditional culture.

While Chinese culture has been inherited and developed, Macao's multicultural characteristics have also been maintained.

Ma Anna works as a chef in a Portuguese restaurant which enables foodies to have a bite of the fusion cuisine.

"What makes us different from other restaurants is that we use Macao ingredients. Because I was born and raised in Macao. We will have [Chinese] sausages for Chinese New Year as it represents a taste of home. If I can put what we eat for the Chinese New Year into our Portuguese cuisine then I will call it 'Chinese heart in a Portuguese dish'," said Ma.

In recent years, the SAR government has continuously increased its support for the cultural and creative industries so as to boost the diversified development of the region's industries.

Hu Chih Chieh is a designer for cultural products who got his start three years ago with the financial aid from Macao cultural and creative fund. Now, Hu's humble start has developed to more than 10 chain stores scattered around the region.

"There are numerous beautiful buildings and stylistic patterns in Macao. This is a pattern from the Macao Military Club, it is beautiful but not easy for people to discover," said Hu, introducing a product he designed.

"In fact, I want to make these things into souvenirs using my concept of youth and creativity so that tourists can bring those products back to their countries to spread the knowledge of Chinese culture. I hope that people love the small city where I was born - Macao," he added.
