Storyline

Saudi Arabia hosted on Monday a meeting for the signing of the Charter of the Council of Arab and African Coastal States of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden in its capital city Riyadh to overlook the political, economic and security issues of the region.

Egypt, Sudan, Yemen, Djibouti, Somalia, Jordan and Eritrea are members of the new alliance. Foreign ministers of these countries attended the signing ceremony.

Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan said in a following press conference that as the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden take an important position in global shipping and trade, the council will coordinate the security, investment, development and environmental protection issues in the region to enhance the region's ability to respond to dangers and challenges.

Saudi Arabia hosted the first foreign ministers' meeting of Arab and African Coastal States of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, and announced in Dec. 2018 the formation of a group of countries overlooking the region.

"It is not just the results of efforts by Saudi Arabia, but all other countries in the region. The establishment of the council will help to maintain the regional peace and stability. Through consultation and cooperation, it will safeguard the interests of relevant countries and people. We all have confidence in it," said the Saudi Foreign Minister.

In terms of the recent tensions in the Middle East and the Gulf region, the minister reaffirmed the position of Saudi Arabia, calling for restraint by all sides to avoid the escalation of the situation.

"We are very keen that the situation of the region doesn't escalate any further. It's certainly a very dangerous moment. And we have to be conscious of the risks and dangers not just to the region, but to wider global situation. Therefore we hope that all actors take all the steps necessary to prevent any further escalation and any provocation," said the minister.
