In December, exports totaled 1.67 trillion yuan (about 242.9 billion U.S. dollars), up 9 percent, and imports 1.34 trillion yuan (about 194.9 billion U.S. dollars), up 17.7 percent. The volumes of foreign trade, exports and imports all hit a monthly historical high."

China's foreign trade rose 3.4 percent in 2019 to 31.54 trillion yuan (about 4.58 trillion U.S. dollars), the vice minister of the General Administration of Customs said in Beijing on Tuesday.

Zou Zhiwu briefed the media on China's foreign trade situation in 2019 on the day.

"In 2019, China's foreign trade volume reached 31.54 trillion yuan (about 4.58 trillion U.S. dollars), an increase of 3.4 percent over 2018. Exports grew 5 percent year on year to 17.23 trillion yuan (about 2.51 trillion U.S. dollars) while imports climbed 1.6 percent to 14.31 trillion yuan (about 2.08 trillion U.S. dollars). The trade surplus was 2.92 trillion yuan (about 423.7 billion U.S. dollars), which expanded by 25.4 percent," said Zou.

He said China's foreign trade maintained stability on the whole while improving quality in 2019, with its scale rising quarter by quarter.
