Storyline

"Pet Paradise", a unique type of indoor zoo, recently appeared in several places in east China's Shanghai Municipality, attracting many visitors to closely interact with small animals.

Zoolung Zoolung, one of the unique zoos opening last June, covers an area of 4,000 square meters. It has more than 80 small animals including toucans, auricular foxes, and capybaras. The total experience time is about two hours, during which staff members provide an all-round instruction, guiding visitors to feed and touch the adorable animals. Compared with the traditional outdoor zoos, the animals here are smaller in size, so that visitors can safely interact with them.

The income of the "Pet Paradise" mainly comes from tickets. The tickets range from 80 yuan to 200 yuan (about 10-30 U.S. dollars). Some venues also provide catering and souvenir businesses.

"The number of visitors peaks on weekends and holidays. Normally we have basically more than 1,000 visitors on weekends, and the highest number reached 2,000. Our overall reception reached 120,000 in six months," said Yu Bo, general manager of Zoolung Zoolung.

Another "Pet Paradise" in Shanghai's Yangpu District organizes birthday parties for children, so that they can have a good time together with animals such as alpaca. Subcontracting venues for such events also provides extra income for the "Pet Paradise". Parents said they not only celebrated birthday for the children, but enjoyed a good time themselves as well.

"This is my first time to come to a party in a pet house, so I think it's pretty novel. Actually I enjoyed it myself even more than my child did," said a mother coming with her child.

Visitors have to book tickets in advance if they want to experience the unique zoo on weekends.

"Usually at weekend, all the tickets were booked three to four days ahead. But there are fewer people on work days, so visitors can come whenever they want," said an owner of another "Pet Paradise".
