The Wuhan Municipal Health Commission provided answers to some frequently asked questions (FAQs) on cases of viral pneumonia caused by a new-type coronavirus at its official website on Wednesday, saying that the city has taken various measures to detect, prevent and control new cases.
According to a statement released by the commission the day before, there were no new cases of viral pneumonia caused by the new-type coronavirus, no cured cases discharged from hospital, and no new death was reported in the city.
The viral pneumonia caused by the new-type coronavirus firstly appeared in Wuhan in central China's Hubei Province in early December 2019.
After the outbreak of this epidemic, Wuhan immediately carried out case screening in all medical institutions in the city. Tentative diagnoses showed 41 cases suffered from pneumonia caused by a preliminarily determined new type of coronavirus so far. In recent days, the city has further strengthened case monitoring and search work, in order to detect cases as early as possible.
The existing investigation results indicate that no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission has been found and the possibility of limited human-to-human transmission cannot be ruled out, but the risk of sustained human-to-human transmission is low. At present, further studies are being carried out by combining clinical and epidemiological data.
The 41 cases included one family case, which was a couple. The husband got sick first, and he was an employee of the Wuhan South China Seafood Wholesale Market. The wife denied any history of exposure to the market.
Referring to the incubation period of other diseases caused by other coronavirus, and relevant information and current prevention and control practice of this novel coronavirus case, the medical observation period of close contacts was set as 14 days, and the close contacts were put under medical observation at home. During the observation period, once the close contacts are found to have fever, cough and other abnormal clinical manifestations, the close contacts will be promptly sent to the designated medical institutions for screening, diagnosis and treatment.
Of the 41 confirmed cases, the majority were male, with more cases occurring in the elderly. Fever and cough were the main symptoms in the early stage, which could be manifested as persistent mild disease. Patients at older age or having underlying diseases are more likely to progress to severe disease.
Preliminary results of existing etiological studies and epidemiological investigations showed that most of the cases were related to exposure to the Wuhan South China Seafood Wholesale Market, while a few denied any history of exposure to the market, and some had been exposed to similar cases. No community transmission has been detected.
After the closure of the Wuhan South China Seafood Wholesale Market, the city strengthened the disposal of market sanitation by conducting disinfection and garbage cleaning. In order to strengthen the traceability work, environmental samples were collected in the market for testing, and some samples were positive for novel coronavirus. Meanwhile, preliminary investigations into other markets have found no clues to the source of infection.
A female tourist from Wuhan had been confirmed as the first person in Thailand infected with the novel coronavirus. The patient is currently receiving treatment in isolation in Thailand, and close contacts with the patient who have returned to China are being followed up and receiving medical observation.
