Storyline

Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with visiting Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza in Beijing on Thursday.

Wang welcomed Arreaza and said he is the first Foreign Minister that China has received in 2020, which shows the strong unity and friendship between China and Venezuela.

The past year has seen major changes continue to unfold around the world, and has also been a year which saw Venezuela face up to various challenges, Wang noted.

Wang said facts have proved that the United States' "Monroe Doctrine" has long been outdated, noting that sanctions and outside pressure are unpopular and there is no way out to impose external solutions.

China has always advocated peacefully resolving Venezuelan issues through dialogue, he added, reiterating that China will continue to firmly support Venezuela in defending its national sovereignty and dignity, and in safeguarding its legitimate rights and interests.

China stands ready to work with the international community, in line with the basic norms of international relations, to continue to promote peaceful talks and to play a constructive role in pushing the Venezuelan issue towards an inclusive political settlement as soon as possible, Wang added.

Arreaza said Venezuela attaches great importance to its relations with China and is willing to deepen practical cooperation with the country, strengthen communication and coordination, adhere to multilateralism, oppose power politics and push the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries to a new level.
